The task for this blog post was to identify types of media that I use and to give examples of specific products that I use. I then needed to explain and explore how those different products are accessed and how and where you can access the same information. Next I was asked to explain how digital technology can ease the process of information access and then to provide the pros and cons of digital technology.
Social Media: Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp.
To access these Social Media sites you can use a smartphone, a PC/laptop or a tablet. These sites can be accessed in the form of apps along with legitimate websites. Social Media is used by other areas of media, as many radio stations use Twitter or Facebook to reach out and to interact with their listeners, and television shows and films also use these sites to promote their products.
Newspapers and Magazines: NME, Empire, Total Film 250, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly
Accessing this form of media has three options: firstly, going out to a shop and buying a hard copy of the newspaper or magazine that you wish to purchase. Secondly, you can subscribe to the magazine or newspaper on your smartphone and automatically receive new issues when they are released. Thirdly, you can go to the magazine or newspaper’s online website and read articles on their webpage.
Newspapers and magazines are used in the social media area as well. Many people on social media sites share links when they share posts on their social networking sites, and they can hyperlink for people to go ahead and read an article that they have linked to.
Radio: Capital FM, BBC Radio One
Radios can be accessed through car radios, smartphones, radio station websites and through television channels. Many radio stations have their own television channels so that people who may not own a radio can still listen to their broadcasts. Smartphones are a quick and simple way for people to listen to radio stations because it is usually the business of downloading the radio broadcaster’s app and then listening to the radio station. Most radio stations now have their own websites where you can visit and more often than not you can listen live to the radio station online.
Radio uses most other forms of media, as many radio stations are promoted and advertised in commercials on television, and they can also ave advertisements in newspapers and magazines. Many radio stations and broadcasters also have their own Twitter and Facebook pages, which they can then use to reach out to more of their listeners and also to promote themselves and other media forms.
Apps: (iPhone apps: iMessage, Facetime), Netflix, YouTube
Smartphone and tablet apps are very useful to express media forms. Many large online networks have their own apps now, so that their product is more accessible to their audiences. Apps such as Netflix and YouTube, which are originally online websites, both have successful apps available on smartphones, tablets and laptops, to widen the reach of their product.
Majority of apps available on smartphones, tablets and laptops have advertisements at some point, some of which promote other apps, such as games, whereas other ads are promoting sites such as Netflix and YouTube and other networking sites and their apps. Apps are a form of media used in interactive media, with different games available to be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Not only this but social media evidently use apps to expand the coverage of their sites, and radio stations often have their own apps allowing their listeners to tune in on their smartphones or tablets and giving their listeners more access to their station.

Film: Suicide Squad, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Tangled
TV & film can be accessed through multiple different pathways. One pathway is watching a television show or film on the TV when it is aired, or by recording said show/film and then watching it at a later date. The next pathway is watching TV shows or films on sites such as Netflix and Hulu online or on apps where these shows and films can be streamed legally and watched.
Most forms of social media help to promote both TV and film, but I think the main ones would be Twitter and Facebook. Majority of television shows and upcoming films have their own Twitter and Facebook profiles, and with those accounts they promote their product and share relevant information on them.
Magazines also help a lot to promote TV and film because they often do interviews with actors, and they also have cover pages that are regularly starring a new upcoming film or a recurring TV show.
Do you think digital technology can ease the process of information access?
Yes, I believe that with the technology that we have in this day and age, we can access much more online and we can gather up information faster, more efficiently, and with much more ease; information is just a few keyboard presses and a couple of clicks away, it’s very easy nowadays to find information that you need, because the internet contains so much research and information gathered by others, that it is rare for you to not be able to find what you’re looking for online.
It can also be used with the latest tech giving owners of said technology the opportunity to gain any information that they wish to receive and they can easily find out what the want to know.
What are the pros and cons of digital technology?
– The digital era promises a better future for everyone; the benefits and results of digital technology are seen all around the world.
– Navigation systems in cars to ensure people do not get lost; safety precautions.
– Authorities (police forces and government agencies) have use of the latest tech to keep people safe and unharmed.
– Digital technology gives people more to lose, and makes it easier for people to take it (hacking).
– Some of the newest tech invades the privacy of others without there being a consent to do what is being carried out.
